Current work

The work from your miniature gardens is going well, sorry I forgot to take any photos to show you. Just now I just wanted to make this point that of course everyone is handling this element of the project differently, but I think what works best is to keep it simple, so work from a small area, and have some photographs too, and or reproductions of art work so that the painting you produce stems from all these sources.

and more portraits

the emphasis here was to see the model in his context, to draw the surrounding shapes as part of the subject, to find lines which describe a journey through the background and across the model, thinking all the time about how the areas fitted together and were part of the same image. What delightful and intriguing drawings these are. I put them all up for you to see.

PORTRAITS SEPTEMBER 2014

the first task for this term was something new, working really large in pastel, so the portrait filled the whole page. You might not realise quite how big these are, so the largest portraits here are on a full
sheet of sugar paper, almost imperial, or A1.

NEW Term

here are just a few of the drawings of bundles of different varieties of wood, sticks, dried weeds, which started this terms work off.

and here are some of the bits of subject matter which you worked from. Lovely work as ever, good objective and careful drawing.

Summer School at Natural Surroundings

Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday have been busy days for me at Natural Surroundings, Bayfield  near Holt. We worked on water colour techniques, some of them a little more unusual than you might expect. We worked in the Chalet, and then went outside to put the lessons into practise. My aim as ever to make you master of your materials and able and confident enough to make the paints do what you want!

Loads of sketches and paintings were completed, all sorts of techniques and a variety of materials experimented with, above is just a tiny example.
We enjoyed the peaceful and varied natural surroundings, and enjoyed the homemade lunches and even cake too!
