Monday Challenge, Who needs Credit Cards anyway?

......Now moving on from the organic shapes you have been working on, do you remember when we used credit cards, and various sorts of card board to paint with?

dip or paint the long edge of the card in watercolour, acrylic or oil paint and push or pull it over your paper and see what textures you get. Let colours mix themselves on the paper.

This tecnique works well with buildings, rooftops, chimneys, and angular shapes because the straight edges of the card automatically give precise lines.

However artist Jane Human uses this technique for landscape and organic shapes.

See what you can do with it!

See how much you can do in ten minutes. This is a quick way of painting!

MONDAY CHALLENGE........

Time for some colour, I think.

Here is a photo of some leaves. They are just what I have gathered in my garden today. I have put them here just so you can see what a variety there is once you start to look, and I have spread them out so you can see the patterns they have. I suggest you collect some, and experiment with using them to print with. Watercolour or acrylic paint. You will need to experiment because you never quite know which ones will work best. You need to try out different dilutions of paint. And place layer over layer if you want. Feathers work well too.

I suggest you think about using harmonising colours, with just a little of the complementary colour to add verve and vitality. Try using different coloured paper.

Just enjoy the textures and effects you create. You can cut up your paintings for cards later, choosing the best bits. (I have borrowed this idea from Sheila. Have a look at her 'all over' leaf pattern from a couple of weeks ago)

Or you could try to place a focal point (asymetrically obviously) in your design to attract your viewer's eye.

........you could even construct a fantasy landscape..........

..have fun.......

Water colour technique.......

Shirley found a Sheila Hancock programme on watercolour, Turner, on BBC four, I found it on I Player easily. Well worth haveing a look if you have time. Also look out for Portrait Artist of the Year, and Landscape Artist of the Year on Sky Arts, channel 11, terestrial, various times, and the Great Pottery Throwdown on  Channel Four. And also on Channel Four Grayson Perry's Art Club 8pm on Feb 26th.......

more ideas?

I just found this image, a drypoint print (I think) by Trevor Price who has an online exhibition at the Bircham Gallery in Holt. I think it took more than ten minutes but ties in so well with this weeks challenge that I thought you might like to see it.......

Monday Challenge.....

I have been really excited by the dynamic and strong images you have sent in!

This week I suggest a landscape idea, but with the inclusion of a roadway or path. As soon as you add this you imply a sense of direction, and perhaps mystery. Your eyes are tempted to follow the strong line, or triangle shape of the path or road into the distance. Is something about to happen? Will someone appear coming towards you?

You can conjure up atmosphere by altering the amount of sky versus land, by how much you emphasize the path, or by experimenting with colour.

Quick ten minute paintings again I hope, ink, scribbles, water colour or whatever.

I include some of my photos, probably not to copy but to suggest starting points. I expect you have some of your own.

And I hope you might keep the snowdrops or flowers on the go too because many artists have tried to capture the idea of time passing.....

good luck!
